Beware of scams when exploring your Florida debt relief options

On Behalf of | Dec 19, 2021 | Bankruptcy

Those facing massive debt in Orlando, Florida, often have no idea how to address their situation. They may consider filing a chapter 13 or chapter 7 bankruptcy solution but then reject the idea because they do not understand the process. Logically, this leads them to consider other options to reduce or eliminate their debt.

If this scenario resembles your situation, we want you to be wary of debt relief solutions that sound too good to be true. Many villainous individuals are lying in wait to perpetuate a scam on those in search of relief.

Is there some way to detect these scams?

Fortunately, debt-relief scams seeking to rob you of what little expendable funds you may have, do come with warning signs. We urge you to pay attention before you hand over any money to a supposed debt relief agency or individual. Some warning signs to watch out for include:

  • Requests to pay service fees upfront before they act to resolve your debt
  • Promises to get rid of your student loans or child support obligations
  • Guarantees that they can eliminate most or even all your debt
  • Recommends that you stop communicating with your creditors
  • Claims that they can have your interest rates dramatically reduced

No legitimate agency or person would ever ask for upfront fees or make unfounded (and often impossible) promises. If the promises they make sound too good to be true, it is almost certainly a scam.

We know that many Florida citizens fear bankruptcy. However, it remains one of the most effective and least harmful remedies for overwhelming debt. If you are unsure if bankruptcy is the best option, consider seeking additional information. In many cases, learning more about Florida bankruptcy law can help you make an informed decision about your circumstances
